2nd Runner Up Jumping Through the sunset at Carpinteria Beach, California. Photo © John Nordstrand "This was captured during one of the more spectacular evenings from winter 2014. I live close to this spot, Carpinteria Beach in Carpinteria, California, and tried to find a good place to setup for the shot. I was fortunate to walk all the way down to the end of the beach where I saw the tidal pool. As the sunset unfolded, the reflections in the pool just got better and better. I had originally liked the image just as a landscape. But there is a local guy who walks the beach every night, and he had come down and gone all the way around the point. On his return, he just happened to "jump through" the perfect spot." Camera details: Canon 70D, a Canon EFS 10-18 Zoom Lens F4.5/5.6, and the settings were ISO 400, 10 mm, F 8.0 at 1/125. @www.nature.org

First Runner Up Yosemite at night. Photo © Kris Thornton "Last summer, my best friend and I traveled through Death valley and Yosemite. We spent three days camping and hiking around, taking in what this beautiful world has to offer. We hiked around most of the day and decided to set up in this small meadow. In the distance there is a small campground and children were playing in the field with headlamps on. Before it got too dark we set up the gear on a tripod and focused on the gorgeous half dome. It was getting dark fast and I knew I likely had one chance to get a good shot. We sat for about another hour waiting for the night to become black as could be and the only light was from the stars, moon, a few passing cars and if you look closely a climber's head lamp on the side of the mountain. I used a trigger and had the camera set in bulb mode. I did this shot as a 30 min exposure. I wanted to go for 40 min, but with the passing cars, I thought the photo was ruin...

Sailfish get their name from the large dorsal fin that stretches almost the entire length of their body and is higher than their bodies are thick. They can swim at speeds of up to 110 kilometers per hour. Their size, speed and spirited fight make sailfish a favorite among big-game fishers. 1st Prize Contemporary Issues Single Micah Albert, USA, Redux Images for Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting 03 April 2012, Nairobi, Kenya A woman sits on bags of waste she has salvaged, at the Dandora municipal dump, outside Nairobi, Kenya. She said that she enjoys looking at books, even industrial catalogues, as a break from picking up garbage. The dumpsite, some 8 km from the center of the Kenyan capital, is one of the largest rubbish dumps in Africa. People living in the slum area around the site have been found to suffer from increased levels of lead in their blood, as well as above normal incidence of kidney disease and cancer. Gases rising from decomposing waste lead to high rates of respiratory disease. Despite the health risks, between 6,000 and 10,000 people earn a living from the dumpsite, seeking food waste, scavenging goods for resale, or separating materials for recycling. Informal cartels run the recycling operation, paying pickers around €2 a day.  Opened in 1975...

1st Prize Nature Storie The prize-winning pictures are presented in an exhibition visiting more than 100 cities in over 45 countries. The first 2013 World Press Photo exhibition opened in Amsterdam on 26 April 2013. Paul Nicklen, Canada, National Geographic magazine 18 November 2011, Ross Sea, Antarctica  Swimming emperor penguins shoot to the water’s surface. The cloud of bubbles they create may help confuse predators. Emperor penguins’ body shape and poor climbing ability make it difficult for the birds to haul themselves ashore, especially onto icy or rocky coasts. It is also a moment when they are especially vulnerable to attacks by predators, such as the leopard seal. But the flightless emperor penguin is capable of becoming airborne, by swimming at up to three times its normal speed, and launching itself from the water to clear the edge of a shoreline. Recent research shows that the penguins do this by releasing air from their feathers, in the form of tiny bubble...
