For more devout youth, Terengganu malls to close during Friday prayers
Shopping malls in the conservative east-coast state of Terengganu will shut for Muslim prayers every Friday beginning next year, in a move to stop Muslim youths from loitering and avoiding their religious duties.
This will affect hypermarkets like Giant and Mydin and businesses operating within their premises, which will have to close form 12.30pm to 2.30pm every Friday, The Star Online reported.
The state Barisan Nasional government made this decision during a meeting with the executive council last week, and said this today in a sitting of the legislative assembly.
The news portal quoted a state government spokesperson saying that all local councils in the state would be informed of the move, and the councils would then notify all shopping-mall owners.
"This will be enforced after January 2015.
"The decision is made to prevent Muslim youth from loitering at these malls during Friday prayers," the source was quoted as saying. – December 9, 2014.
